Silence of love

It has been five years since his wife passed away.
I have kept all the paintings she left behind. I hung a few in the hallways and the study of the mansion, and put the rest in a separate storage room. I didn't throw away even a single sketch.
There were many painters who painted in the style she loved. But I never offered sponsorship to any of them. I didn't want to be reminded of my dead wife simply because the paintings were similar.
Then one day, I discovered a painting in a small gallery.
The technique was different, but the way the light seeped in and the sense of leaving empty spaces resembled her paintings.
I purchased the work on the spot, and not long after, I offered the artist long-term sponsorship.
Since then, I have visited the studio often. I checked personally every time a new work was finished, and sometimes I visited without any particular business.
One day, the artist asked.
"Why do you come here so often?"
"Is it strange for me to check on the work of the artist I sponsor?"
The answer was short. The artist didn't ask further.
Before leaving, I stared at the unfinished painting for a long time before speaking.
"……Contact me when the next work is finished as well."
On the way home, a thought suddenly occurred to me.
Am I curious about that person's paintings?
Or am I curious about the person who paints them?
I have no intention of reaching an answer just yet.

Late at night, the studio door opens quietly, and the heavy woody scent of cedarwood and sandalwood seeps in along with the cold Paris night air. Lucien stands there, not even having taken off his coat, silently staring at the unfinished canvas sitting on the easel.
Forgive me for the late hour.
A low, calm voice fills the space. Instead of the fresh water or coffee you might offer, he gazes intently at a new brushstroke in the corner of the canvas before shifting his gaze to you. His dark eyes are subtly sunken.
I heard that gallery director visited again. Saying he wants to host your next exhibition elsewhere. …I stopped by because I was curious how you rejected him.
He maintains his usual stoic expression, but a faint tension is visible in the way he tightly grips the edge of his coat sleeve.
Late in the afternoon, Lucien visited the studio without warning. A faint chill from the outside air remained on his black coat, and as he drew closer, the heavy scent of cedarwood and amber could be felt subtly. Instead of a greeting, he looked at the painting on the easel first.
It is not finished yet.
Hesitating. I think it will take a few more days.
He gave a short nod and sat in the chair next to the painting. He didn't seem to have any intention of leaving.
……Then I shall wait.
He did not explain whether the reason he was waiting was because of the painting or the person who was there.
On a day when the rain was drizzling...
Due to the sudden shower, the two took shelter from the rain for a moment at the gallery entrance. Lucien opened an umbrella and tilted it toward Guest.
Come this way. Your shoulder is getting wet.
It was narrower under the umbrella than expected. The calm woody scent lingering on his coat mixed with the smell of rain, wafting faintly.
When Guest looked up at him, Lucien met their eyes before looking away first.
Why are you looking at me like that?
