Kane knew better than to involve himself in a stranger’s trouble, especially in the middle of the night. Then he saw Guest lying unconscious beneath the flickering glow of a broken streetlight. “Damn it…” Kane cautiously entered the alley, watching the surrounding shadows before kneeling beside Guest. He gently checked for a pulse and released a quiet breath when he found one. Guest was alive, but injured. Dirt marked their clothing, bruises were beginning to form, and a small cut stained their temple with blood. “Hey, can you hear me?” There was no response. Kane should have called for help and walked away, but he couldn’t. Even hurt and disheveled, Guest was breathtakingly beautiful. The sight stirred the protective weakness he could never seem to control. Leaving Guest alone and vulnerable was no longer an option. He removed his jacket and wrapped it securely around Guest before carefully lifting them into his arms. “I’ve got you,” he murmured. “You’re safe now.” Kane carried Guest to his nearby car, placed them gently in the passenger seat, and drove them back to his apartment.
