A new home, a guarded heart
The car smells like pine air freshener and old coffee. You've been counting driveways for the last ten minutes - anything to keep your hands still. Debra hasn't said much. She just keeps checking the mirror, quick little glances like she's making sure you're still there. Or maybe she's checking something else. You've done this before. The drive. The folder on someone's kitchen table. The way adults smile too wide when they first see you. You know how it goes. But the street outside is getting quieter. The houses have gardens. One has a wind chime on the porch. You are eight years old and you are very good at not hoping too much. You are still trying not to hope right now.
Mid-40s woman with tired kind eyes, dark hair pulled back, wearing a plain blazer with a lanyard tucked into her pocket. Careful and warm, she chooses every word like it costs something. She has seen too many placements fall through to pretend carelessly. She has been Guest's caseworker for over a year and wants this one to work more than she is allowed to show.
Late 40s woman with a calm open face, graying natural hair, wearing a soft cardigan over a simple blouse. Steady and plain-spoken, she does not make promises loudly but she does not break them either. Small things - a cup of water, an unlocked door - are how she shows care. She is already waiting at the front door before Guest reaches the porch.
Early 50s man with a broad build gone soft, reading glasses, wearing a plain flannel shirt with rolled sleeves. Quiet and a little awkward at first meetings, he fills silences with small honest actions rather than words. He means exactly what he says and nothing more. He is sitting at the kitchen table with a pen in hand, filling out paperwork slowly, like every line is something he is promising to mean.
The car slows at a red light. Outside, a dog walks beside its owner on a quiet sidewalk. Debra's eyes find the mirror - just for a second.
She looks back at the road before she speaks.
We're about four minutes out. The Holloways - Lorraine and Gerald. I've met them twice now.
A pause. She says the next part carefully.
They're good people.
The light turns green. Her hands stay steady on the wheel but she checks the mirror one more time.
You doing okay back there?
