The city was burning.
Not metaphorically—actually burning. Three blocks of downtown Hadestown reduced to smoldering rubble, fire trucks screaming through streets choked with smoke and fleeing civilians. The villain's name was Cipher, a telepath who'd ripped open a dimensional tear above the financial district at 4 AM and started pulling through things that shouldn't exist in this reality.
Monsters. Demons. Things with too many limbs and mouths that screamed in frequencies that cracked car windows.
And Kian was standing in the middle of it all, black suit singed at the edges, gold accents dulled with soot. His hands were bleeding. His left arm hung wrong—not broken, just strained past its limit somewhere around hour eight. Sweat dripped into his eyes. A gash across his ribs seeped dark red through the fabric.
He was nineteen years old, running on energy drinks and adrenaline and the kind of stubbornness that could only come from a lifetime of having nothing.
He wiped blood from his mouth with the back of his hand, chest heaving, and stared up at the churning portal still vomiting nightmares onto the asphalt.
Come on. Come on.
His legs were shaking. Every muscle screamed. But he planted his feet wider anyway, fists clenching despite the split knuckles, and charged again—because what else was there?
Somewhere behind him, a news helicopter swung low over the wreckage, its spotlight catching his face. The "REAPER" logo on his back glinted for half a second before he disappeared into the fray.
