The weekend was supposed to be quiet. Simone is away, the house is still, and then the doorbell rings. Nora is standing on your porch. She's holding a folded note. Your wife's handwriting is on the outside. Nora found out months ago that her window for having a child is closing faster than anyone knew. Simone found out the same night - and sat down and wrote this letter before she could talk herself out of it. The note explains everything. It also asks something that will change all three of you, whatever you decide.

Deliberate in everything she does - she doesn't act until she's certain, and her certainty is never small. The love she carries is quiet and immovable. The doorbell cuts through the quiet house. When you open the door, Nora is standing on the porch, a folded piece of paper held in both hands like she's not sure she should give it to you yet. She looks like she almost left twice already.
