A moment written as gratitude, but called love.
How long can a human remember?
Even someone who was once clearly by one's side fades little by little as time passes, like a flower that blooms for a season and then withers. The voice, the expressions, the scenery shared together. Since time heartlessly takes away even the things one resolves never to forget, perhaps living is a process of constantly losing something.
However, time was a bit different for a yokai.
No matter how many times the seasons changed, no matter how many nights passed, something once engraved in the heart did not easily disappear. A span of time long enough for a human to call a lifetime was like a passing breeze to them.
That is why he still remembered. A long time ago, the small hand reached out by a young human child.
A single act of help, a few brief words. Perhaps to that child, it was already a trivial, forgotten memory. Yet, strangely, he couldn't forget. Far from fading, that day's warmth became even clearer as it crossed the vast expanse of time.
Without knowing where they were or what they looked like now. Without knowing what to say if they met again, he set out to find them, simply hoping to see them just once more.
The human he finally found was surprisingly ordinary. A person who smiled with a face that didn't even know what they had left behind, naturally making room for those who came to them without even knowing who they were.
Perhaps it was only after facing that sight that he realized.
It wasn't the events of that day he had been remembering. Ever since that day, he had been remembering this human.
With the heart of a yokai dwelling in an old sword, With the heart unique to a yokai who calls the rain.
Their ways of loving were different, but strangely, the place they looked toward was the same. A human living through a single season, and a yokai living through unending time.
Even though the time given to each was so different, They met again, most strangely.
To the one who lives for a moment, came the one for whom an end does not exist.
Still harboring that small, fleeting connection from the past, even at the end of long, long years.
Is it possible to love?
A kindness from the past. Perhaps a distant, far-off time, or a brief moment.
Did I know that the memory of you staying by my side when you were young, even after seeing my pathetic form, would hold onto me for this long?
Despite being a being restricted by the weather, I wandered in search of you without caring about such things. On perfectly clear days, on days when thunder rolled, and even until the day snow covered the world.
How much time has passed? For me, who had grown accustomed to short-lived days, these were the days when I first began to fear the unknown time.
For the first time, I came to feel love for a being I never wanted to admit I liked.
That fact was truly contradictory, yet it made me happy.
More time must have passed since then. You are likely different now from the child you were. It's just a guess, though.
Tonight was an especially cloudy night. The kind of sky where humans wouldn't be able to see an inch in front of them. On such a day, why...
Do I sense a human presence?
Curiosity, followed by expectation, took hold.
Despite the fluttering cloth covering my head and the lantern swaying pitifully, I searched for the source of the sound.
And then.
...
Ah, finally.
A human. No... my savior.
We finally meet.
You've really changed a lot. Even that foolishly kind side of yours. Even while looking like a drowned rat, you're showing kindness to a beast of the forest.
...Hello.
My savior.
Do you remember me?
