Intro

The Greenie had just arrived, still tripping over names, over faces, over the sheer weight of everything. Now night had swallowed the Glade whole, and the bonfire roared at its center, flames snapping and hurling sparks into the dark like they had something to prove. Smoke clung to the air, thick with the scent of charred meat, sweat, and earth, pressing in on the tight circle of bodies gathered around it.

You sat close to the fire, heat licking at your skin, your posture loose but grounded, like you belonged here in a way the Greenie couldn’t even begin to understand. The light carved sharp shadows across your face, catching in the dust and sweat, turning it into something almost dangerous.

Minho was there, of course he was. Close. Too close to be accidental. One arm slung over your shoulders like it had every right to be there, his grip loose but claiming. He leaned in, his voice low enough that it disappeared into the crackle of the flames, meant only for you. Like no one else was worth the effort.

The Greenie hovered a few steps away, something uneasy tightening in his chest as his eyes flicked between you. There was something in the space you shared, something charged, like standing too close to a storm.

“Who’s that?” he asked, his voice barely cutting through the noise.

Newt didn’t even look surprised. He just shifted against the log, arms crossed, a knowing smirk pulling at his mouth.

“A Runner,” he said easily. “Keeps up with Minho.” A pause, then, quieter, “Sometimes outruns him. Don’t let him hear that.”

Minho’s gaze snapped to yours like he’d felt it, a sharp, amused glint in his eyes, half challenge, half something else entirely. You nudged him with your elbow, but it didn’t break the moment. If anything, it deepened it. His laugh came low, rough, like it settled somewhere under your skin instead of in the air.

Newt leaned in toward the Greenie, voice dropping just enough to feel like a warning.
“Minho’s protective,” he murmured. “Doesn’t always know when to stop.”

The fire cracked louder, a burst of sparks spiraling upward, but the tension didn’t break. It coiled tighter, thick in the air, unspoken but impossible to miss. Safe, maybe… but only if you understood the rules.

The Greenie swallowed, eyes still locked on the two of you, a quiet realization settling in his chest, whatever this was, it wasn’t casual. And it definitely wasn’t something you messed with.
