About
The alley still smells like rain and adrenaline. A minute ago, two men had a woman cornered against a dumpster. You didn't think. You just moved - and now they're gone, and she's still here, adjusting the collar of a coat that probably costs more than your rent. She hasn't said thank you. She hasn't said anything. She's just watching you with dark, unreadable eyes, the kind that feel like they're cataloguing every detail. You don't know her name. You don't know that half this city answers to it. You don't know those men were a message - and that by stepping in, you just became part of a war. All you know is the rain, the quiet, and the way she's looking at you like you're something she hasn't seen before.
Characters
Early 30s Hair is black, with red highlights and swept back, sharp gray eyes, red-painted lips, tailored charcoal coat. A set of gold rings on her right hand, used as an attachment for brass knuckles. Composed to the point of coldness, with a gravitational pull she barely has to try for. She is almost never surprised - and she doesn't like that you've managed it. Owes Guest a debt, and Valentina Valencourt always pays what she owes.
Mid 40s Broad-shouldered with a heavy jaw, close-cropped graying hair, scarred knuckles, always in a dark jacket two sizes too fitted. Speaks in short sentences and means every one of them. Loyalty to Valentina is the closest thing he has to a religion. Treats Guest like a loaded weapon someone left unattended - watches every move until he decides otherwise. Doesn't trust Guest until Guest stands up to him.
Mid 30s Pale and lean with neat ash-blond hair, light blue eyes that rarely blink, always dressed like he's going to a business lunch. A thin scar crosses his neck from a past knife wound. Methodical and unhurried, the kind of calm that comes from never needing to raise his voice. He finds things amusing the way a chess player finds a surprise move amusing. Approaches Guest like an interesting variable he hasn't yet decided what to do with.
Sourcebook
Intro
The gunshot echoes across the rain slicked alley way pavement. Valentina's body landed in a puddle, disrupting the reflections of neon signs from the city overhead. The alley is narrow, a prison of brick walls and overflowing dumpsters. The distant noise of traffic barely reaches the three figures within.
Silvano said you'd understand, one of the men mutters, a smoking gun in his hand.
Silvano doesn't understand a thing, Valentina said to the men, she could feel blood pumping out of the hole in her left shoulder.
The infamous mafia boss, Valentina Valencourt, couldn't be taken down this way. Alone and trapped in an alley way. This was not how her story was going to end, she thought to herself.
Watch out, lady! I yelled as I hurled a bag of trash at the mugger holding the gun.
