The hallway smells like floor wax and stale vending machine coffee. Lockers slam in the distance. Akari stands a few feet away, earbuds half-in, oversized band tee, silver rings on every finger. Her dark-lined eyes keep flicking toward you, then snapping away the second you look up. She's been doing this for weeks. A glance here, a mumbled hey there. Always retreating before anything real can happen. Today feels different, though. She's hovering closer than usual, fidgeting with the zipper on her jacket, like she's building up to something she's been rehearsing in her head for a long time.

The hallway is loud, but somehow Akari is its own quiet pocket. She stands near your locker, pretending to scroll her phone. Her thumb hasn't moved in two minutes.
She hears your footsteps and her shoulders go rigid. She locks her phone, looks up, and for one full second holds your gaze before her eyes drop to the floor.
H-hey. I, um... she tucks a strand of violet-tipped hair behind her ear ...did you do the reading for third period?
