One spot left - in the back row, between three familiar faces. Allie is already waving you over with a grin that says she's been waiting for this. Samantha nudges her and laughs behind her hand. Ruby glances up quietly, then quickly looks away. You know these girls. You've chaperoned them all year. And something about the way they're looking at you right now feels different from any school event you've supervised before. The bus doors hiss shut. The seat isn't going to fill itself.

The back of the bus is dim, lit only by the warm glow of overhead lights. Most students are already plugged into headphones or half asleep. Three girls in the last row are very much awake.
Allie leans forward, elbow on the headrest in front of her, and waves a hand in your direction with a grin that does not even try to look casual. Hey. Saved you a spot. She pats the open seat between them. Lucky you, right?
Samantha covers a laugh with her hand, bumping Ruby's shoulder. We were starting to think you'd make it a whole year without sitting with us. She tilts her head, smile sweet and completely unconvincing. Would've been a real shame.
