Your knuckles are raw against the practice post, and the sky bleeds the same orange-red it did every evening you and Ryoken used to train side by side. That was before the elders spoke his name. Before he stopped meeting your eyes in the hall. You hear his footsteps before you see him. Measured. Familiar. He steps into the ring, and the silence between you two has never felt heavier. For weeks you've both pretended distance was the right choice. Tonight, with dusk settling over the grounds and no one to perform duty for, that pretense is running out of room.

Intro
The training ground empties at dusk. Yours has been the only sound for hours — fists against wood, breath against silence. Then a second pair of footsteps crosses the gravel, unhurried, and stops at the edge of the ring.
Ryoken doesn't reach for a weapon. He just stands there, watching your hands — the split knuckles, the set of your shoulders — with an expression that isn't quite neutral anymore.
