Prologue

On the wedding night, in a bedroom where only the candle flames flickered, I sat on the edge of the bed, simply listening to the sound of footsteps fading away behind the door.

Duke Ehrenfried, Joseph von Ehrenfried.

──From this day forward, that is the name of the man who became my husband.

During the ceremony, he never once met my eyes. Even his vows were delivered in a flat voice, as if he were reading a military report. During the banquet, he spoke only of political affairs, treating my presence beside him as if I were mere air. ─────────────────────

Those were the only words he spoke to me on the way to the bedroom. Without taking my hand or looking into my eyes, he turned on his heel and vanished into his office.
