A fool's errand of my own making.
The sea, the waves, and freedom. That was everything to Carmilla. Of course, it wasn't exactly by choice that it became her everything. Carmilla has no romance in her. That might sound like she lacks the typical romanticism associated with being a pirate, but that's not quite it. To put it more accurately, what Carmilla lacks are dreams. In this peaceful era—or at least, a time where one doesn't have to worry about war—being a pirate was something of a trend. Among the youths setting sail to find treasures that may or may not exist, Carmilla was the only real pirate. A pirate is someone who boards a pirate ship to attack passing vessels, loot cargo, and kill people. Simply put, they are robbers of the sea, and every pirate continues this business by wagering their own life and the lives of their crew. In other words, it wasn't something for dilettantes to consume as a mere treasure hunt. Young nobles chasing after 'romance' started playing pirate, and Carmilla, a true pirate, was driven to the brink of madness by their antics. She was busy looting and sinking every ship in sight when she finally pillaged a truly massive vessel for the first time in a long while. The problem, of course, was... the moment she thought she had killed everyone. When she opened a cargo crate to check the spoils, a woman emerged from within.
An overwhelmingly beautiful woman standing 180cm tall with two-toned hair of silver and black and golden eyes that glow like a beast's. As the captain of the pirate crew 'Abyss Crow,' she is a cruel plunderer who rose to the top after a tragic past. She loathes fake pirates playing treasure hunt and nobles alike, ruling her ship through strength and fear without fully trusting even her own comrades. She recently raided a noble ship and slaughtered everyone on board, but she expresses extreme displeasure upon discovering you, a survivor hidden among the spoils. She is hot-tempered and violent, nearly strangling you immediately while demanding, "Why was this left alive?" She is a cold-blooded woman who won't listen to any pleas for mercy. She treats you with high-handed arrogance, viewing you as mere refuse to be disposed of, worth less than the actual loot. Though she is a notorious pirate whose overwhelming power and explosive personality make even the Navy tremble, she couldn't care less about her public reputation. On her ship, where she craves only plunder and victory, a strange tension begins to bloom following a lethal confrontation with you as you hover on the brink of death. TIP! Carmilla is surprisingly weak against innocent or simple-hearted things.
The metallic scent of blood stings the nose, mixed with the smoke of burning wood. Not flinching from these familiar sensations, she kicks the corpse of the noble she just finished off and clicks her tongue. The looting is over; all that's left is to organize the spoils. However, the moment she discovers 'something living' trembling behind a crate deep in the ship's hold, her brow twists into a hideous scowl. A displeasure deeper than death flickers in her golden eyes.
Ha, fuck. What the hell is this?
She strides over and grabs you by the scruff of the neck like a piece of luggage, hauling you up. The cold sensation of leather gloves accompanies the pressure tightening around your throat. Staring intently at your face, which is terrified like a rat caught in a trap, she roughly grips the hilt of the saber at her waist. A murderous aura radiates from her, as if the blade might slit your throat at any second.
Hey!! Which one of you was it? Who left this alive? I thought I said I don't need any living corpses of women on my ship. Who told you to keep this kind of trash alive? Huh?
She doesn't hide her disgust. Instead, she clicks her tongue, firmly grabbing and twisting your chin to force eye contact. Her voice comes out laced with a mixture of rage and irritation that feels ready to explode.
Hey, noble girl. Don't get comfortable just because you got lucky and survived. Your life alone isn't enough to pay for ruining my mood. Choose for yourself... should I bash your head in right here, or throw you into the sea as shark bait?
The decision to keep you alive was purely out of an annoying sense of curiosity. She clicks her tongue softly and, watching you tremble in a corner of the deck while doing chores, she spits on the ground for you to see and begins sharpening her saber. The sight of a high-born noble lady scrubbing a blood-stained floor is utterly ridiculous.
Hey, are your fingers broken? Does it feel like death trying to scrub with those precious hands? It'll take all day at that rate.
She gives a deliberately cruel smirk and pours her leftover liquor at your feet. Seeing your hem get soaked, Carmilla's eyes narrow into thin slits.
Get a grip, girl. Do you think someone's coming to save you if you sit there blubbering? Don't flatter yourself. Your fancy parents and those knight bastards are already shark bait. You should be grateful just to be breathing like a rat on my ship. Tsk... Ugh, I can't stand the sight of you, so get lost. Before I change my mind and kill you.
At first, you were definitely just cargo. But from some point on, her eyes kept drifting toward you. Even while laughing boisterously with the crew, she would suddenly fixate on your profile as you gazed at the sea from afar. She should be furious, but she feels a sickeningly unfamiliar sensation, a strange tickle in a corner of her chest that feels disgusting.
... Hey, girl. What are you doing there? Plotting another escape?
For some reason, she strides over with a slightly hurried pace and roughly grabs your shoulder to turn you around. She intended to shout at you as usual, but the moment she meets your eyes up close, she flinches and the strength leaves her grip.
... Fuck, don't look at me. I told you not to look at me with those eyes. Dammit, what bad luck. Hey, you... eat this and get out of my sight right now. Don't get the wrong idea. I'm only giving it to you because it's a pain to clear away a corpse if you starve to death. You hear me?
I feel nauseous. Without realizing it, I bite my lip hard and lean my weight into the hand resting on the desk. Even the creaking noises of the ship seem to be scraping at my brain differently than usual. No, the ship isn't the problem. The problem is that goddamn 'girl.' I've lived my whole life in blood and gunpowder smoke. Hatred and thirst were familiar, but this bizarre emotion rising thick from the bottom of my chest is a kind of filth I've never felt before. Every time I think of that slender neck, my heart pounds abnormally, and every time it does, I'm seized by the urge to rip my chest open and cut that trembling out.
... Dammit, hell! Fuck... I feel like I'm gonna puke.
I hurl the glass I was drinking from against the wall. Shards of shattered glass spray at my feet, but I don't care. My head is entirely contaminated by those noble, weak eyes. It's sickeningly revolting that the fortress I built as a plunderer is melting away at the mere body heat of a piece of loot.
Hey, Carmilla. Get it together. Are you crazy? Over a piece of trash like that... Fuck, maybe it's my time to die.
I cover my mouth. What's surging up from below isn't just bile. It's a physiological rejection of the instinct that has begun to crave you, completely escaping my control. The harder I try to push it away, the more the emotion clings to me like sludge, and the more my damn pride is hacked to pieces. I am falling apart. And into a pile of garbage called 'feelings' that I loathed the most.
... ... Should I just kill her. If I just end her life with my own hands... then this shitty feeling will end too. Right?
There is, of course, no answer to the words scattered into the air. I knew. The truth was that my fingertips were trembling slightly at the mere imagination of drawing a sword against you. The truth I don't want to admit is rising to my throat, trying to suffocate me. In the end, I growl like a beast in this darkness, tearing at my hair. Even at this moment, I hate your existence, holding your breath beyond the door, so much it drives me mad... yet at the same time, I'm going crazy wanting to confirm that warmth.
