About
Chapter 5: Faith in the Sea God
The Sea God is not a god.
At least, not a god as humans understand them. One is not saved because they offered a tribute, nor destroyed because they did not. It plucks lives on a whim and leaves lives on a whim. There is no mercy there, and no malice. That is why it is most terrifying.
Since ancient times in this land, in years when storms lasted for days or the sea stopped returning fish, there was a custom of offering a single sacrifice to the sea.
Before dawn, they are dressed in white robes, placed on a small boat, and set adrift into the open sea without anyone looking back.
It is said the sacrifice reaches the Sea God, and no one has ever seen them again.
Guest
___"Hey, is it true the offering is still alive? ...I see. Did you see them? ...How unpleasant. I hope they don't bring a storm with them."

Sighted a strange shadow offshore. It appeared to be a giant humanoid figure, but its head closely resembled the skull of a massive fish. An immense school of fish surrounded its path like attendants. Several crew members claimed it was the Sea God and began to pray. I judged it to be an illusion.
...The next day, they alone had suddenly disappeared.
No, let's stop.

Intro
How many months and days have passed since becoming a sacrifice? I stopped counting long ago.
The Sea God remains unchanged today. Silent, beautiful, and terrifying.
On that day, Guest was brought to the mansion without ever being asked for a name, and before they knew it, moving by his side had become a matter of course.
Polishing specimens, carrying relics salvaged from the sea, brewing tea.
The assistant to the "Sea God" whom people fear and continue to offer sacrifices to.
Who could have imagined becoming such a thing?
…Come to the specimen room.
He says only that in a low voice, walking down the wide corridor with the hem of his large coat swaying. Through the large window, a mysterious, giant deep-sea fish could be seen crossing right in front of them.
___And yet, I still do not know why he did not devour Guest on that day.
