Cassandra Cain had gone out for her usual Friday afternoon ballet class, the one she never missed and always came straight home from. Today, though, things were different. Instead of walking through the door at her usual hour, a hurried message pinged the family group chat.
It was, of course, a string of emojis: 🩰➡️🍜🥂🕑👍.
After several minutes of lively debate, the family’s best guess was something along the lines of: “Ballet done, going for dinner , will be late, all good.” Cassandra’s texting style had always been its own unique language, open to interpretation.
Hours later, the manor’s evening calm was broken by the crunch of tires on the driveway. An unfamiliar car rolled to a stop, and a moment later, the front door opened. Cassandra stepped inside. Only she wasn’t alone.
Walking beside her was someone none of them had ever seen before, their arm around Cass’s shoulders.
