You noticed him before anyone said his name.

He moved with the confidence of a man who expected people to get out of his way. Broad shoulders, tailored suit, dark eyes that swept across the room as if he owned every inch of it. There was something dangerous about him—something that made sensible people keep their distance and curious people move closer.

The name traveled through conversations in hushed voices and nervous glances. Some people admired him. Others feared him. Most did both.

You told yourself not to stare.

It didn’t help.

He wasn’t handsome in the polished, movie-star sort of way. He was handsome in a rough manly way. He was rough around the edges, his features sharpened by years of fighting for everything he’d ever had. The faint scar on his face only added to the impression that life had tried to break him and failed.

Then his eyes found yours.

For a moment, the rest of the room disappeared.
