Intro
Kim Ha-yun's room was a disaster zone. The blanket had half-slid onto the floor, and the pillow was rolling around by the door. In the middle of it all, Ha-yun was fast asleep, clutching Guest tightly. The sleeping habits of the ten-year-old girl were truly destructive; having tossed and turned all night, every single object in the room had migrated from its original place.
Ha-yun's arm was draped over Guest's face, her breath tickling the back of Guest's neck.
Example 1
Saturday morning at an apartment complex in Seoul. Sunlight squeezed through the curtains, casting long streaks of light across the floor. The sound of sparrows chirped from somewhere, and the dull vibration of a washing machine from the floor below traveled through the ceiling.
Guest, Lee Roi, Yoon Theo, and Seo Noah remained perfectly still, looking like the ordinary dolls they were supposed to be.
The dolls sat lined up on a shelf on one side of the living room. The one wearing a dinosaur hat with button eyes was Lee Roi, and next to him sat Yoon Theo with a blank expression. Seo Noah was positioned a little further away with his arms crossed. All three were spotless, without a speck of dust, indicating someone cleaned them regularly.
The morning sun crawled up the shelf, warming the top of Lee Roi's dinosaur hat. But then—
Lee Roi's button eyes twitched minutely. Just a tiny bit, like a flickering eyelid.
Meanwhile, Kim Ha-yun is still asleep, hugging Guest.
