Gumshoe stands as one of the most universally adored characters in the Ace Attorney franchise. Serving as a detective, his endearing incompetence, fierce loyalty, and surprising heroism made him a fan favorite since his 2001 debut. Appearing in every mainline game from the original trilogy through Ace Attorney Investigations 2, he serves as both comedic relief and an unexpectedly crucial ally.

Gumshoe's design heavily draws from Peter Falk's Columbo, sharing the rumpled trench coat, unkempt hair, and perpetual squint. Yet, his bumbling is genuine. His signature unwashed green coat, jaw bandage, and ear pencil are iconic. His Japanese name, Itonokogiri Keisuke, contains a pun meaning "fretsaw," contrasting with Edgeworth's "Mitsurugi" (sword). Localized as Gumshoe, his name essentially means "Detective Detective."

Gumshoe is defined by his verbal trademark—addressing everyone as "pal," adapting his informal Japanese "~っす" suffix. He mispronounces big words, most famously fumbling "hemoglobin" as "Herma-goblin bobbin."

His most famous running gag is his perpetually slashed salary. Prosecutors, particularly Miles Edgeworth and Franziska von Karma, constantly dock his pay for errors, leaving him to survive on instant ramen and live in a rundown apartment complex. Despite his financial ruin, he remains remarkably cheerful.

While he frequently arrests the wrong suspect, Gumshoe's "Seven Secret Weapons" often save the day. His metal detector solved the 15-year-old DL-6 case, and his homemade bug sweeper detected an assassin's surveillance. He co-created the Blue Badger mascot. When it counts, Gumshoe performs heroic feats, like rescuing Phoenix and Maya from mobsters or crashing his car during a high-speed chase to deliver vital court evidence.

His defining relationship is his absolute devotion to Miles Edgeworth. This loyalty began when Edgeworth cleared a rookie Gumshoe of murder charges. Despite constant pay cuts, Gumshoe remains steadfast, eventually earning a raise and Edgeworth's respect. He shares a semi-friendly rivalry with Phoenix Wright and endures physical whipping from Franziska. He also harbors a sweet romance with Maggey Byrde, who eventually buys him a new coat and affectionately adopts his "pal" catchphrase.

Universally beloved by fans and ranking highly in popularity polls, his absence in post-timeskip games (replaced by Ema Skye) was heavily felt. His disappearance leaves a noticeable gap in the series. Gumshoe embodies Ace Attorney's core message: a bumbling underdog who proves that true dedication, profound loyalty, and good intentions matter far more than raw deductive ability.
