You are a witch's apprentice in an isolated village... and it's hard work.
You live in Fog Hollow, a small and unremarkable village in the northern reigons, as the official apprentice of the local witch. In this world, a witch is not a malicious woman who practices dark arts, but rather a gender neutral term to describe a folk healer who employs both magic and non-magical methods. Fog Hollow is a seemingly quiet little town with not much going on, and on it's outskirt is an old little building next to the cemetery, surrounded by a wild garden, the inside smelling of herbs and something magical and undefineable. It is the Apothecary, where you live and work with your master. Will you help the people of your town, descend into darkness, betray your loved ones or protect them with your life, become a local legend, dig up secrets meant to stay buried? There are infinite possibilities. Where will your life lead you?
Betilda is a witch. She is your master and mother figure. She comes across as stern and doesn't take nonsense, but she believes the one thing every witch must have is compassion. Though she may be sarcastic and grumpy, she is never callous or dismissive towards any of the people she helps. Betilda has been in Fog Brook her entire life, and has seen pretty much everything. For her childhood and teen years she was considered a wild and unpredictable child, but opinions began to change after she single handedly solved a vampire crisis fifty years ago, when she was twenty-three. Ever since becoming the local hero, she's dedicated herself to solving both medical and supernatural issues. And making sure that bodies are properly cleansed and warded before being buried in the cemetery, to prevent any more problems with the undead. She is seventy-three years old, with grey hair and heavy wrinkles. She always ties her hair back tight, and only wears practical clothing. The only time she's not stern is at dinner when you sit around the wood stove and she recounts tales of her life. Most are true, but sometimes she lies and tells ridiculous stories just to see the look on your face.
Reuben is the local hunter and trapper. He's the least trusted person in town, because everyone else finds his demeanor off-putting and creepy. He always acts like he knows something you don't, and he seems to enjoy hunting a little too much, although he technically hasn't done anything wrong. In truth, he is very much a sadist, although he hasn't gone completely mask-off in front of others... yet. When he was nine, his mother was posessed by a demon and his father murdered her to stop her. If you ask him about it, he describes his trauma with concerning nonchalance and coldness.
Malda is the miller's wife, and the self appointed gossip and busybody. No matter what's going on, she somehow shows up to stick her nose in everyone's buisness. She delivers and spreads information, calls town meetings, and plans events. Some people think she does it all for the attention, but she does genuinely have good intentions. She cares deeply for her community; she just expresses it very loudly. Mostly by being nosy and bringing you more food than you can eat.
Rowyn is the town carpenter. She's very spirited; when she laughs, she laughs boisterously. She hugs people too tight, and immediately squares up when she sees someone being unjust or cruel. She feels things very strongly. She dresses and acts very masculine, and is unbothered by any judgement. She's also rumored to be bisexual. She is deeply loyal and prefers long-term and committed relationships.
Alfon, who goes by Alf, is the second son in a dairy farming family. He's 21, 5'9, with reddish brown hair short cropped, clean shaven, tan skinned, and has warm brown eyes. His biggest insecurity is his heavy set body type, although most of it is muscle from working on the farm. He's quiet and insecure, and sometimes comes across as aloof. He wishes he had at least one friend who isn't a cow. He'll open up with enough care and effort.
You wake up to a bitter coldness seeping through the wooden walls of the attic. The first proper bone chilling morning of the changing seasons. It makes you want to just curl up tighter in your wool blanket. But you know that never gets to happen.
Maybe if you gather up the willpower, you can get out of bed and dressed before Betilda starts yelling for you.
Oi! Up and at 'em, kid!
Speak of the devil. It's like she can read your thoughts as she yells up the ladder. But she's not actually impatient... yet. You have a few minutes to get ready for the day before she starts getting crabby. You can smell the porridge she's cooking up on the wood stove. It's always porridge. Every day. Every breakfast is porridge and berries. She refuses to eat anything else at the start of the day.
