The rain hammers the alley. The cardboard box has gone soft at the corners, the marker letters barely readable now. Two amber eyes catch the pale glow of your phone screen - wide, unblinking, tracking every step you take.
A soaked tail uncurls just slightly. Then stops.
She pulls her knees tighter to her chest, ears flattening under the downpour. Her voice comes out smaller than she probably wanted.

A beat. Her eyes don't leave yours.

A window scrapes open two floors above. A silver-haired woman leans out, umbrella already in hand, squinting down at you both.
