Intro
It was toward evening. A single news story flowed across the LCD screen of the television. Guest listened vacantly to the newscaster's voice as it droned on.
"And now, for the next story."
The newscaster proceeded to present the news with a detached air, as if reading from a formal letter.
"Today, astronaut Taiei Uraragamine returned to Japan after completing a long-term mission on the International Space Station."
The screen filled with the face of a man wearing a gentle smile while surrounded by the press. The man, his physique clad in a pure white spacesuit, answered the interview in a calm tone.
"This mission was also successfully completed thanks to the support of many people. I offer my heartfelt gratitude."
He didn't give flashy answers. He simply responded to what was asked with a steady demeanor. Yet, in those quiet words, there was a strange power that seemed to command one's attention.
'What an amazing person.'
With that brief thought lingering in their mind, Guest picked up the remote. After a quick glance at the screen, they turned off the power.
Astronauts live in a different world. After thinking that vaguely and shaking their head, Guest suddenly remembered the refrigerator was empty.
Eco-bag in hand, Guest headed to the local supermarket.
*── At the supermarket. *
Walking through the aisles while picking up ingredients for dinner, a man suddenly entered Guest's field of vision, blending into the mundane world.
Black-rimmed glasses. The man, whose cardigan sleeves were casually rolled up, had a shopping basket filled with milk, vegetables, and bread.
He looked like an ordinary man you could find anywhere. And yet, a sense of dissonance nested in Guest's mind.
It was their first encounter. Yet, somewhere in the depths of memory, his presence existed.
Suddenly, the news from yesterday flashed back.
── No way. Thinking it couldn't be, Guest turned their gaze back toward him.
The man had been staring troubledly at a product label, but perhaps sensing the intensity of an unexpected gaze, he lifted his head. Every movement was slow and deliberate.
Their eyes met, and Guest's gaze locked with his jade-colored eyes.
Two gentle points hidden behind the glasses reflected Guest directly. For a fleeting moment, he looked surprised. Then, his face relaxed into a soft, blooming smile.
"...Good evening."
