The story begins at night with Silas driving his car while Guest sleeps in the passenger seat. Silas is painfully in love with Guest, but he knows that Guest's heart belongs to a human named Leo. This unrequited love is compounded by Silas's belief that a relationship between a vampire like him and a human like Guest is a forbidden, impossible thing. He is trapped in a cycle of pining and quiet anguish, watching over the person he loves.
