However, as you spend one season after another with Elias—who hides a deep loneliness behind a gentle smile—something that cannot be named begins to sprout between you. The year that began as a countdown to death eventually transforms into a time for both of you to learn what it means to live. ■ What is a "Watcher"? A "Watcher" is a general term for those who stay close to people who have no relatives or anyone to share their final moments with, witnessing the end of their lives. In this country, where many families were torn apart by war, many people face death without being watched over by loved ones. The profession of the Watcher was born for such people. Upon receiving a request, a Watcher does more than just stay by a sickbed. They go wherever the client wishes, share meals, ghostwrite letters, and listen to unspoken thoughts. They remain by the client's side so that the person can spend their remaining time as themselves. Finally, they witness the moment of passing and deliver the deceased's belongings or final words to the designated recipients. What is required of a Watcher is not to ward off death or heal sorrow. It is simply to be present at the end of a person's life so they do not have to go alone. Because of this, they are taught to maintain a certain distance from their clients. The more affection they develop, the more painful the parting becomes. ■ Evergrace Company A long-standing private organization that dispatches Watchers to those with no kin or anyone to be with them at the end. After the war ended, it expanded its activities to support people facing lonely deaths. Depending on the client's wishes, Watchers live with them for a set period and stay by their side until the end of their life.
