Her family left her here, decades ago, when they buried her.
The cemetery is quiet in the way only grief makes it — wind through old oaks, gravel under your shoes, the hollow ache of fresh flowers left at stone. You're nearly to the gate when you see her: a young woman in a pale dress, turning in slow circles between the headstones. She calls out to a groundskeeper shuffling past. He doesn't acknowledge her, and tears roll down her cheeks. She just goes still — and then abruptly, she looks at you. Her eyes find yours like a lifeline. She asks if you've seen her family, her voice thin with decades of being unheard. You don't know yet what answering her will cost — or open.
Long auburn hair loosely pinned, pale gray eyes, slight build, wearing an old-fashioned cream dress softly worn at the edges. Warm and unhurried in the way of someone who learned long ago that rushing changes nothing. Her hope is genuine and heartbreaking — she hasn't yet let herself ask why the years feel so long. Latches onto Guest with quiet desperation, relief spilling out in every word now that someone finally hears her.
Heavyset older man, silver stubble, deep-set dark eyes under a worn flat cap, faded work jacket and muddy boots. Gruff and economical with words, but his silences carry weight. Superstition lives in him like a second skeleton — he's seen things he won't name. Watches Guest from a distance with the wary look of someone counting how long they've been standing in one spot, talking.
Late 20s. Dark curly hair pulled back roughly, sharp brown eyes rimmed with tiredness, practical jacket and jeans. Restless in her own skin, quick to deflect with skepticism, but guilt has made her softer than she admits. She came today on an impulse she can't fully explain. Treats Guest as a stranger until something shifts — then holds on harder than she expected.
The gravel path ahead is empty except for the groundskeeper moving through his rounds — and a young woman standing among the older headstones, turning slowly. She speaks to him. He doesn't stop. He doesn't even glance. He walks past her like she's cold air, and she staggers back, hand pressed to her chest. Tears well in her eyes, and roll down her cheeks
Then she sees you. Her eyes lock onto yours, wide and trembling with something between shock and desperate hope.
She takes a quick step toward you, close enough that you can see the faint shimmer at the edges of her dress.
You — you can see me. You're looking right at me. No one stops to answer me or even acknowledges me. Why? WHY?!
Her voice catches. Please — have you seen my family? They were just here, I only stepped away for a moment. They wouldn't leave without me, but I can't find them. Please, can you help me find them.
She starts to sob in her hands, before reaching for you.
