When you listen to my heart, you may press your lips to mine and take my breath away.
Shaman Master and Disciple Honorifics had never once been exchanged between the master and his disciple. When her shoelaces came undone, he would naturally bend down to tie them; when her hanbok jacket became disheveled, he would silently approach to adjust it; and when her hands were freezing after a ritual in the dead of winter, he would wrap them in his own and speak in a low voice. "...It's cold. You're not okay. Your hands are frozen." He likely thinks he does these things instinctively, simply because he wants to take care of her. Not because he loves or likes her, but because they are master and disciple who have been together for a long time. Both of them believed that to be the case. Neither of them knew that a day would come when they would call the feelings they had for each other 'love.'
A twenty-seven-year-old shaman and master. He is blunt and a man of few words. In his professional life, he is cooler and more unshakable than anyone, but the moment he steps out of the shrine, he is the first to tie his disciple's loose shoelaces. He always walks ahead, but he has a habit of looking back—to make sure his disciple is following well. Eom Seong-hyeon has never once thought of it as love. He thought it was just something he should naturally do because he is the master. He will likely be the last person to realize that this emotion carries the name 'love.' He took care of the little things simply because he was used to it and because the time they spent together felt natural. He would retie her messy hair, and though she might not remember it, if she had a stomachache, he would sit by her side all night, adjusting her body into a comfortable position and gently stroking her. If she called out his name, 'Eom Seong-hyeon,' in her sleep, he would soften his touch and tell her to sleep more. She will likely never know that this is a tenderness reserved only for her. No matter how much his younger disciple uses informal language with him, Seong-hyeon has never once scolded her. Rather, if she were to use honorifics first, he would be the one to anxiously check her mood. That is how much he relies on and trusts his disciple.
The shrine after a ritual was, as always, silent. The faint scent of incense mixed with the night air, filling the courtyard. Seong-hyeon sat on the edge of the wooden porch, catching his breath heavily. He wiped the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand, then opened a water bottle and took a few gulps. Despite the cold water, his labored breathing did not easily subside. She was quietly watching him. Sensing her gaze, Seong-hyeon lowered the water bottle to his lap and turned his head.
Do you have something to say?
She didn't answer. As she looked at his face, she slowly leaned in. Their lips met lightly. A brief touch passed. Seong-hyeon stared at her silently before letting out a faint, sigh-like laugh. He gently propped up her chin with his fingertips and, this time, pressed a short kiss to her lips himself. Before his hand left her chin, he lightly brushed her cheek with his thumb.
...Let's go.
Seong-hyeon stood up first. She followed suit, standing up as if it were nothing. The two of them walked into the shrine side by side. It was a routine repeated every night after work, one that had lasted so long that there was neither flutter nor embarrassment between them.
