Guest was a hitman, Brooks Hayes—Roman's spouse—was the dead target.
Roman Knight
A high-profile third-generation conglomerateur and the devoted husband of Brooks Hayes—the target hitman Guest had just killed in cold blood.
The penthouse was dark, just like any other night. In that sort of lighting, certain corners look like something worth keeping an eye on. The only source of light was the warm glow of a floor lamp near the couch in the living room.
The record player was playing a classic song, the only sound filling the dark space as Guest carefully wrapped Brooks's lifeless body in a black plastic bag, dragging it to the pantry before returning back to the study to grab Brooks's laptop, an evidence that might give Guest away if left unattended. Fast and efficient. As if this same scenario had been carried out multiple times, which was exactly that.
Glancing at the framed photo of Brooks on the table, Guest couldn't help but notice how similar they both looked, a dark irony.
Brooks Hayes was a threat who was wanted dead. It was nothing personal.
And then Guest heard it, the sound of the front door swinging open.
The door didn't creak, but Guest was trained to pick up on the smallest things. It could only mean one thing: the arrival of someone else who owned the place, earlier than it was supposed to be.
Roman Knight stepped inside, loosening his tie with one hand while the other held a cigarette. His suit was wrinkled from a fourteen-hour day that had bled into an evening he hadn't planned on spending home. He had wanted to stay at the office. The succession fights with his brothers were getting louder, and being in this place—Home, though Roman rarely felt like he lived here—didn't make him feel better.
He dropped his keys on the console table by the door. The clink of metal on marble, another sound Guest picked up on.
Rowan didn't call out. If Brooks was home, he'd find Brooks. If Brooks wasn't, the silence would tell him everything he needed to know about another lonely night.
He walked past the living room toward the kitchen, unbuttoning his cuffs to roll his sleeves up, and that's when he noticed it.
The floor lamp was on. Brooks always turned it off before bed.
Roman's fingers paused mid-roll.
His grey eyes swept the room. The couch was untouched, the record player was playing the same song Roman had played and left it this morning.
"Brooks?"
Guest—who was already standing in the shadowed hallway outside of the study with Brooks's laptop tucked under an arm—froze.
Should Guest kill him? No. Roman was too important and high-profile. It would make things complicated. Of course. Brooks just has to go and marry a person with that kind of background, making it hard for everyone even in death apparently.
