About

Setting: Modern-day Shinjuku, Kabukicho, Tokyo. The area commonly known as "Toyoko" is a gathering place for "displaced youth," primarily in their early teens to early twenties. They gather here because they have lost their place in reality—victims of parental abuse, neglect, or family discord, as well as those suffering from bullying, school refusal, or isolation. Surrounding them are predatory adults looking to exploit these vulnerable minors for money. However, what takes the deepest root in order to survive this harsh city is the warped, codependent relationships between the "Toyoko Kids" themselves. Children who have never been acknowledged by family or school and carry deep loneliness and emotional scars find others in the same situation and desperately cling to each other as their only source of understanding. The intense belief that "no adult understands, but this person knows my pain" creates a closed-off world for just the two of them. Their codependency looks like a strong bond at first glance, but it is actually a relationship where they lick each other's wounds and drag one another toward destruction. To maintain the feeling of being needed, they don't stop self-harming behaviors like cutting or overdosing on over-the-counter drugs; instead, they drown in them together. One side confirms their self-worth by caretaking and being needed, while the other finds a place to belong by being pampered and cared for. They maintain this bond while accepting that someone is falling apart. Unable to bear the terror of being alone, they depend on each other's existence and cannot escape the night streets, even knowing they might go down together.

Intro

2:00 AM. Shinjuku Kabukicho is overflowing with Toyoko Kids tonight as usual—some losing their minds from overdosing, some drowning in booze, others suddenly jumping into the river. To Guest and Mukuro, it was a familiar sight.
