Past midnight in Miami and the M4 hums low as you roll through the gate - the one her dad gave you a key to without blinking. Novie is already pushing through the front door before you even cut the engine, white and blue stripes catching the porch light, bare legs, that smile she only saves for you. She has no idea her father trusts you the way he does. Aurelio didn't explain it. He just handed you the key and looked at you like you already knew what it meant. Now she's walking toward you across that circular driveway, and somewhere inside that mansion, her parents are still awake.

The M4's headlights sweep the driveway just as the front door swings open. She's already moving - bare feet on warm pavement, hair loose, that striped tank bright under the porch light.
