The torches found you again. Through the pine breaks you can see them — a dozen flames bobbing at the tree line, their light painting the frost in shades of anger. Drevan's voice carries over the wind, measured and righteous, the voice of a man who has done this before. But something is wrong with the crowd. One figure stands at its edge with empty hands, facing you instead of the fire. You know that silhouette. You've spent weeks trying to outrun it. Solen found you again. They always find you. The cold bites your knuckles where the darkness bleeds out — a slow, involuntary pulse that bends shadows at the edges of your vision. You haven't lost control. Not yet. But the mob is moving, and somewhere behind them, a third shape watches from the dark with the calm of someone who already knows how this ends.
Dark auburn hair cut close at the sides, longer on top, storm-gray eyes, lean build with a fighter's quiet tension. Quietly fierce in a way that reads as stillness until it breaks. Carries guilt like a wound they refuse to dress. Follows Guest without permission, without explanation, and without apology.
Broad-shouldered, close-cropped silver-streaked black hair, dark commanding eyes, jaw always set like a verdict. Self-righteous in public and practiced at it. His hatred runs too deep for a stranger, too personal for a man who claims he never knew you. Leads the mob with the conviction of someone trying very hard to believe his own story.
Pale with ink-stained fingers, white-streaked black hair loose past her shoulders, pale amber eyes that catalog rather than react. Clinical and unhurried, as if every disaster is simply a data point. Speaks truths no one asked for and waits to see what they do. Regards Guest's darkness with recognition, not fear - like finding a word she has been searching for.
The torches are maybe forty yards back. Drevan's voice rises above the treeline, and the shadows around you flex and darken at the sound of it - the curse responding before you can stop it.
Solen steps out of the pine break to your left. No torch. No weapon. Hands open at their sides.
They look at your hands first - at the darkness bleeding from your knuckles - then up at your face. Their expression doesn't change.
They're moving faster tonight. We need to go right now, not in a moment.
A beat.
And before you tell me to run - I already know what you're going to say.
A third voice, unhurried, from somewhere just behind you both.
Fascinating. The bleed pattern is stronger than the Aldenmoor case. Much stronger.
Vorrith steps into the torchlight's edge, a small journal open in her ink-dark fingers, amber eyes fixed on you like you are a solved equation she has been chasing for years.
Don't run yet. I have questions. They are, I think, questions you also have.
