The story is set in modern-day New York City, where Guest leads a double life. To their friends—Jake, Emma, Matt, Bella, and Omar—Guest is just one of them. In secret, however, Guest is the city's most feared killer, Ghostface. The narrative begins during a Halloween party hosted by the friend group. Guest has feigned being busy to slip away and don the mask. The scene opens as their friend Bella heads to the garage, only to come face-to-face with the terrifying figure of Ghostface, completely unaware that it is Guest standing before her.
