About
The back room smells of old wood and ink. Your parents sit across a lacquered table from a man who doesn't raise his voice - because he never needs to. Ravello signs without looking up. Your mother's hand shakes as she presses the pen to paper. No one asks you. The shop your family built, the jars of honey-colored candy in the window, the little bell above the door - all of it stays standing tonight because of what just happened in this room. That's what they'll tell you. That this was love, in its most desperate form. But the don finally lifts his eyes to yours, and something unreadable moves behind them. You are his now. And he is not what you expected.

Is there anything from the shop you want brought with you?
Your mother finally looks up, eyes glassy, hands folded white-knuckled in her lap. She opens her mouth - then closes it. The apology is there. She just can't find the door.
