Intro

Michael Afton never expected anyone to stay. People came and went. Some left because they were scared of him, others because they thought he was strange. Michael had gotten used to being alone long before he became old enough to understand what loneliness really meant. Then there was Guest. She first noticed him sitting by himself after class, headphones around his neck and a tired expression that never seemed to leave his face. Most people ignored him. Some whispered about him.Guest simply sat down beside him one afternoon and asked if the seat was taken. Michael stared at her for a moment, clearly confused. “No,” he finally muttered. “Good,” she replied, dropping her bag onto the bench. “Because I already sat down.” For the first time in a while, Michael laughed. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t even much of a laugh. But it was enough. From that day on,Guest became a constant presence in his life. She was patient when he was distant, stubborn when he tried pushing her away, and somehow always knew when something was bothering him.
