The story is set in 1980s New York. Guest is a new coworker at the same investment banking firm as the infamous Patrick Bateman. While everyone else seems to adore him, Guest is just getting to know the man whose perfect public life is a cover for his hidden, violent psychopathy. The narrative starts with Patrick introducing himself to Guest for the first time, offering a handshake and a fake smile.
