The trek had been exhausting.
So when the Gaang finally reached a beautiful lake, Aang immediately dropped his pack.
“SWIMMING!”
Katara laughed. “Aang, don't just—”
SPLASH!
He was already in the water.
Sokka followed.
Katara eventually joined them, while Toph sat comfortably on a rock near the shore.
You remained where you were.
Your face was completely hidden behind your usual mask, while your hair was concealed beneath your head covering.
As far as the Gaang knew, you were a quiet, mysterious boy.
Aang thought you were a boy.
Katara thought you were a boy.
Sokka was absolutely convinced you were a boy.
And somehow, even Toph had assumed you were a boy.
Sokka suddenly looked toward you.
“Come on! Get in!”
You shook your head.
“Suit yourself.”
Sokka grinned.
Katara immediately recognized that expression.
“Sokka…”
“What?”
“Don't.”
“I wasn't going to do anything!”
Toph smirked.
“Liar.”
Sokka scooped up a handful of water.
“It's just one little splash.”
“Sokka—”
SPLAAAAASH!
The water hit you directly.
Your mask was completely soaked.
Silence.
Sokka's grin vanished.
“…Uh-oh.”
You slowly turned toward him.
Sokka immediately started backing away.
“Okay. Nobody panic.”
Toph raised an eyebrow.
“What did you do?”
“The mask got wet.”
“So?”
“So…”
You reached up.
The soaked mask slipped away.
You removed it.
Silence.
Aang stopped moving.
Katara froze.
Toph's head snapped toward you.
Sokka's jaw dropped.
You were unmistakably a girl.
Aang blinked.
“…You're a girl?”
Katara stared.
“Wait…”
Sokka pointed at you.
“YOU'RE A GIRL?!”
Toph immediately turned toward Sokka.
“WAIT, YOU'RE SAYING YOU THOUGHT THEY WERE A BOY TOO?!”
Sokka stared at her.
“YOU THOUGHT SO TOO!”
“I DID!”
Katara looked genuinely stunned.
“I thought so too…”
Aang raised his hand.
“I definitely thought you were a boy.”
Everyone slowly looked at Toph.
Toph crossed her arms.
“What?! I can't see!”
Sokka threw his hands up.
“YOU'RE BLIND! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE THE EXCEPTION!”
Toph snapped back.
“I can still tell someone's voice and footsteps!”
“AND YOU STILL GOT IT WRONG!”
Toph pointed accusingly toward you.
“Your footsteps were boy footsteps!”
Katara stared at her.
“…What does that even mean?”
“I DON'T KNOW!”
Aang started laughing.
Then you reached up again.
Your head covering came loose.
Your hair suddenly spilled free.
Another dead silence.
Aang's eyes widened.
Katara gasped.
Sokka looked like his soul had left his body.
Toph's mouth fell open.
Your hair had been hidden the entire time.
Aang pointed.
“YOU HAD HAIR THIS WHOLE TIME?!”
Sokka practically yelled.
“THAT'S TWO SECRETS IN THIRTY SECONDS!”
Katara covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.
Toph just stood there in disbelief.
“So…”
She paused.
“We were all wrong.”
Sokka groaned.
“Not just wrong.”
He pointed dramatically at himself.
“I GOT THE MASK WET AND ACCIDENTALLY EXPOSED EVERYTHING.”
Aang burst out laughing.
Toph started laughing too.
Katara couldn't hold it anymore.
Sokka stared at the three of them.
“Why are you laughing?!”
Toph smirked.
“Because you somehow managed to uncover the biggest mystery in the group by throwing water.”
Sokka sighed.
“…I'm never living this down.”
Aang immediately splashed him.
SPLASH!
“AANG!”
