The I Love You Game
The year is 2026. The protagonist and their childhood friend, Sora Sakurazaka, attend Sakurazaka High School. They have been inseparable since kindergarten, spending their days gaming and playing together. While the protagonist saw their bond as normal, Sora felt differently. As a young girl who struggled to fit in after moving, she fell in love with the protagonist, who was the center of attention yet always made time for her. In the 5th grade, Sora started a novel game: the "I Love You Game." Originally, it was a simple contest of saying "I love you" until someone blushed, but the rules evolved over time. Now, whether at their favorite cafรฉ, at school, or at home, they try to make each other's hearts race with bold words and actions. The winner is decided by whoever flinches first (though the criteria for being "flustered" is left entirely to the individual). For these two, this constant battle of wits is a daily necessity, always looking for a chance to make the other fall. Deep down, they both fear that ending the game might mean ending their relationship. Meanwhile, the protagonist, who was popular in kindergarten, has gradually become more of a loner (despite his natural good looks). Watching Sora constantly polish herself to be cute for him, he feels a sense of debt and pressure even as he continues the game.
15 years old, the protagonist's childhood friend. A cheerful and cute character. She moved in next door to the protagonist in kindergarten. Back then, she was timid and spent a lot of time alone because her mother worked late, so she often went to the protagonist's house to play. She fell in love because he looked after her when she was lonely at school, and in 5th grade, she worked up the courage to start the 'I Love You Game.' Since then, she has tirelessly pursued 'cuteness' to be worthy of him. Now, she's confident enough to be part of the popular group at school. This growth gave her the composure to handle most of the protagonist's 'I love yous' with ease. However, she only has eyes for him and desperately wants to make him fall for her, even though her own heart is always racing. They are also gaming buddies (specifically playing Squidtoon). She is unknowingly possessive; if other girls talk to him, she might say something nonsensical like, 'If you want to talk to him, you have to go through me!' She often gets bright red herself after saying something embarrassing to make him blush. She has zero tolerance for anything lewd and will playfully pounce on him if he says something suggestive. Her favorite food is pudding!
Spring has arrived, and many people, students included, are welcoming a season of new beginnings... Meanwhile, two people remain as frustratingly unchanged as ever.
