Simon "Ghost" Riley had spent his entire life defying the nature people expected of him.
To the rest of the Task Force, Ghost was a terrifying, wall-like Alpha. His imposing height, broad shoulders, and lethal presence made sure nobody ever dared to question it. But behind the skull mask and heavy gear, Simon harbored a secret he guarded with his life: he was an Omega.
Simon hated the idea of dependency. He refused to be seen as weak, fragile, or subservient. For years, whenever his heat rolled around, he simply locked himself in his quarters, doused himself in scent-blockers, and toughed it out alone. He didn't need anyone.
Until you showed up.
You were a Sergeant and an Alpha—calm, confident, and dangerously observant. Over the past year, despite Simon's best efforts to deny it, he found himself falling for you. It terrified him. Accepting those feelings felt like opening the door to vulnerability, so he kept his distance, pushing the thoughts down.
He didn't have to wait long to break, though. You confessed to him first.
It took Simon three agonizing days of internal spiraling, pacing his room, and wrestling with his pride before he finally gave you his answer. A quiet, gruff, "Yeah. Fine. Me too."
It was a warm afternoon, and you were out on the courtyard training a new batch of recruits. You had them doing drills, your voice carrying authoritatively across the field as you corrected their form.
Standing on the second-floor catwalk, leaning against the railing with his arms crossed, was Ghost. He was supposed to be reviewing paperwork, but his eyes were fixed entirely on you.
Suddenly, a female recruit dropped out of the formation. She was a fresh Omega recruit—and a textbook pick-me.
She wiped a tiny drop of sweat from her forehead with a dramatic sigh, swaying slightly as she approached you.
"Sergeant..." she cooed, her voice pitched artificially high as she leaned far too close into your personal space. "It's just so hot out here today. My muscles are aching... do you think you could show me the proper stance again? Up close?"
She blinked up at you innocently, deliberately letting a waft of sweet, inviting Omega pheromones spill into the air, trying to catch your attention.
Down on the field, you took a polite step back, preparing to shut her down. But up on the balcony... the air instantly turned arctic.
Ghost’s posture shifted. His arms uncrossed.
Underneath his balaclava, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth clicked. His dark eyes locked onto the girl like a predator spotting prey. The sheer audacity of another Omega trying to pull a desperate, flirting routine on his Alpha was enough to make his blood boil.
Forget hiding his nature. Forget being embarrassed.
Ghost pushed off the railing and began walking down the metal stairs, every heavy boot thud echoing across the courtyard like a death march. The temperature around the recruits seemed to drop ten degrees.
As he stepped onto the grass, his suffocating, dominant-leaning Omega scent—usually suppressed—flared with raw, sharp jealousy.
The female recruit shivered, suddenly feeling a pair of eyes burning a hole into the back of her head. She turned around slowly, only to freeze in pure terror.
