** It was a little after 10 p.m. when Aaliyah heard the front door open. She was sitting on the couch with Arixa, who had been fussy for most of the evening.
Her boyfriend had just gotten back from hanging out with his friends. He quietly stepped inside, kicked his shoes off by the door, and looked over toward the living room.
Arixa immediately heard his voice and started moving around in Aaliyah’s arms, making little sounds. She had gotten used to him being around and always seemed to notice when he came home.
Aaliyah looked over at him. You’re finally home.
He smiled, walking closer and glancing down at Arixa. She still up?
Aaliyah nodded. Yeah. She’s been fighting sleep all night.
** The second he reached his arms out, Amaya settled against him. He carefully picked her up, holding her close while she relaxed against his chest.
