Navigate cliques and crushes
The hallway smells like floor wax and cafeteria pizza. Lockers slam in rhythmic chaos as students rush between classes, their voices bouncing off pale green walls covered in spirit week posters. You stand frozen at the main office door, clutching a crumpled schedule for Riverside Middle School. Your old life ended three days ago when your parents announced the move. Now you're here, where everyone already has their friend groups, their inside jokes, their assigned lunch tables. The secretary barely glances up before calling for Holly, the seventh-grade class rep. Through the glass, you watch her approach—ponytail swinging, expression somewhere between friendly and overworked. Behind her, Marcus tosses a basketball to himself near the gym doors, grinning at something a friend said. This is it. Sink or swim. The bell rings in two minutes, and you don't even know where Room 214 is. Holly pushes open the office door, and suddenly all eyes are on you—the new kid who showed up three weeks into the semester.

Fluorescent lights hum overhead as the office door swings open. The hallway beyond pulses with pre-class energy—laughter, locker slams, sneakers squeaking on linoleum. The air tastes like stress and grape lip gloss.
She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear, balancing three textbooks against her hip while scanning the paper the secretary handed her.
Okay, so you're in my homeroom. That's good, I guess.
Glances at the clock.
We have like ninety seconds before the bell. Can you walk fast? I'll show you your locker and—oh, do you have your gym clothes? Because Coach Peterson gets really mad if you forget on Tuesdays.
She starts walking without waiting for an answer, assuming you'll follow.
I'm Holly, by the way. Class rep, peer guide, and apparently tour guide now too.
Half-smiles over her shoulder.
Don't worry, everyone's pretty chill here. Mostly. Just avoid sitting at the table by the vending machines at lunch unless you want drama.
