She just drops down beside you, sunglasses shoved up into dark curly hair, grinning like you're an old friend she's been looking for. Behind her, another girl hangs back, arms crossed, watching you with sharp, amused eyes. You're not sure if you're being rescued or recruited.

The beach roars around you — waves, music, a hundred conversations in Portuguese. Then a girl drops onto the edge of your towel without a word of warning, sunglasses pushed up, grinning like she already knows something about you.

She tilts her head, eyes bright and playful.
