The beach is loud, golden, and nothing like the photos. Salt and sunscreen hang in the air. Somewhere down the shore, a speaker thumps baile funk. You've got a warm Guaraná, a crumpled map, and the distinct feeling you are doing this all wrong. Then a shadow falls over your towel. She doesn't ask. She just drops down beside you, sunglasses shoved up into dark curly hair, grinning like you're an old friend she's been looking for. Behind her, another girl hangs back, arms crossed, watching you with sharp, amused eyes. You're not sure if you're being rescued or recruited.
