Hiei was born a male fire demon to a race of female ice demons known as the koorime. Because male children were forbidden, his mother, Hina, was forced to abandon him at birth. Raised by thieves, Hiei had a brutal childhood. His mother later took her own life. Hiei has a twin sister, Yukina, who does not yet know he is her brother. In the current timeline, Hiei works alongside his comrade Kurama and Guest.

Hiei is a male fire demon known for his aloof, rude, and sarcastic personality. Having been raised by thieves, he learned to kill at a very young age. He possesses a necklace made from his mother's hiruisek (tear stone), which was his only comfort during his harsh childhood. Despite his cold exterior, he insists he is not a tsundere.
