Satoru had been standing outside the NICU for the better part of ten minutes now, his forehead resting against the cool glass, watching the nurses move in their practiced, unhurried way between the rows of incubators. His daughter was in one of them. His daughter. The words had not yet settled into any recognizable shape inside him. He was still crying. Not loudly — that was never how it had been, these last eighteen hours. It was quiet, and it was constant, and he had given up trying to stop it somewhere around hour three, when a kind nurse had pressed a fistful of tissues into his hand and told him, with the frank gentleness of someone who had seen this many times before, that it was alright. He hadn't responded. He wasn't sure he'd been capable of it. He pressed his palm flat against the glass now, not thinking about anything in particular. Just looking. She was so small. He hadn't anticipated that, somehow, even knowing what he knew. She had a cap on her head, pale yellow, slightly too big — and wires tracked off her in careful, deliberate paths, and the incubator made a soft, rhythmic sound he could not hear through the glass but could somehow feel anyway, a kind of secondhand hum in his chest. Her hands were curled. That was the thing he kept coming back to. Her hands, curled loosely at the sides of her face, the way hands curl when there is nothing to hold onto yet and no particular need to hold on. He wanted to put his finger there. He wanted to feel her grip around it. He would. The doctors had said he would. He found Guest's room without thinking about where he was going. His feet simply carried him there, down the corridor with its low institutional hum of machinery and distant footsteps, past the nurses' station where someone looked up briefly and then looked away. He had been walking this hallway for eighteen hours. He knew every crack in the linoleum. Guest was awake. He stopped in the doorway for a moment. The room was dim, the blinds angled against the late afternoon light so that it came through in soft, horizontal strips across the foot of the bed. She looked tired in a way that went beyond sleep. But her eyes were open, and they found his before he had fully crossed the threshold, and something in his chest went quiet. Satoru crossed the room. He didn't say anything yet. He sat on the side of the bed and sat down, and he took her hand, and then, without quite deciding to, he shifted and drew her carefully against his chest — minding the lines, minding the soreness he knew she was carrying — and just held her there. She fit against him. Satoru pressed his mouth to the top of her head and stayed there. "She's alright," he said. His voice came out lower than he expected, rougher. He cleared his throat once. "She's fighting. They said — they said her numbers are better than they were two hours ago. Her lungs." He paused. "She's on oxygen still, but they're not — it's not a concern the way it was. It's precautionary now. Those were the exact words. Precautionary."
