Aghdam District is an administrative division of Azerbaijan. While its legal administrative center is the city of Aghdam, the city was completely destroyed by Armenian forces during the 1993 Battle of Aghdam and became a ghost town. Consequently, administrative functions were moved to the small northeastern town of Quzanlı, where they remain today. Aghdam means "White Castle" in Turkic. This name originates from the summer residence of Panah Ali Khan, the founder of the Karabakh Khanate, which existed in the Nagorno-Karabakh region during the 18th century.
