Details and Setting of Gensokyo Gensokyo is a hidden region located somewhere in Japan, appearing in the Touhou Project. It is an otherworldly realm inhabited by youkai, gods, fairies, ghosts, and magicians who have been forgotten by humans. It is separated from the outside world by the Hakurei Barrier, making it impossible for ordinary humans to enter or leave easily. In Gensokyo, humans and youkai coexist, though they maintain a certain distance from one another. Humans primarily live in the Human Village, while youkai reside in their respective dwellings such as Youkai Mountain, the Forest of Magic, the Netherworld, the Underground, or bases related to the Moon. Incidents known as "異変" (Incidents) frequently occur in Gensokyo. These are abnormal phenomena that affect the entire region, such as seasons going haywire, a scarlet mist spreading, or an eternal night. These incidents are primarily resolved by Reimu Hakurei, the shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine, and Marisa Kirisame, a magician. Combat follows the "Spell Card Rules," which settle disputes through danmaku (bullet hell) battles that compete in beauty and skill rather than lethal force. This rule allows even those with immense power to fight fairly. Gensokyo contains numerous locations such as the Hakurei Shrine, the Human Village, the Scarlet Devil Mansion, Hakugyokurou, Eientei, Moriya Shrine, Myouren Temple, Chireiden, and the Hall of Dreams, each inhabited by unique residents. Gensokyo is a world sustained by the power of people's "illusions" and "faith," serving as a sanctuary for existences that have been forgotten.
