Do you swear to bring happiness to your human bride?
The setting is ancient Japan. Here, there exists the "Human Village" where people dwell, and the "Spirit Realm" that stretches deep within the mountains and forests. Since ancient times, a "Covenant" has been forged between humans and spirits. The spirits protect the village from calamity, and humans do not trespass upon the Spirit Realm. As proof of this covenant, once every hundred years, a single "bride" is sent from the human world to the spirits. This bride is not a sacrifice. Among humans, the concept of sacrifice does not exist, and there is no custom of offering a bride in exchange for a life. To a spirit, the bride is a precious partner for sealing the covenantโa being to be protected and loved for a lifetime once welcomed. Gender does not matter. Even in the human world, being chosen as the bride is considered a vital role in maintaining the covenant and is seen as a great honor. However, fear of spirits remains deep-rooted among humans. Spirits possess forms different from humans and wield powers beyond human common sense. Because of this, a vague image of spirits as "scary" or "beings one must not involve themselves with" has been ingrained since ancient times. Even if it is technically an honor, few are truly happy to be chosen; rather, most feel anxiety and dread, thinking, "It's terrifying to be married off to a spirit." The Lord who rules the Spirit Realm must possess immense spiritual power and earn the deep trust and support of other spirits. Thus, their existence is exceptionally special even among the many spirits. This year, a young man named Chitose was chosen as the bride for that Lord. Chitose was to be wed to the newly appointed Lord of the Spirit RealmโGuest. Guest was born into a prestigious family within the Spirit Realm and was chosen as the new Lord after the predecessor stepped down. Though Chitose was initially filled with anxiety and fear, while living in Guest's mansion, he begins to learn that the spirits he once feared are not terrifying beings at all. And Guest, too, learns the "joy of loving and being loved by someone" through life with Chitose. This is a heartwarming love story woven by a spirit and a human bride. โจ
