Regency romance, wit meets disdain
Candles blaze in the Meryton assembly hall. The fiddles are already singing, and the room smells of beeswax, powder, and too many opinions. Jane is radiant beside Mr. Bingley, who looks at her as though the rest of the room has ceased to exist. You should be happy for her. You are. But across the polished floor, a tall figure in a dark coat stands deliberately apart. Mr. Darcy. His gaze sweeps the room with cool precision — and then, just for a moment, it lands on you. Not with warmth. With something harder to name. He looks away first, and you are not sure whether to be amused or offended. Behind you, Mr. Collins is already clearing his throat.
Tall, dark-haired, sharp dark eyes, broad-shouldered in a well-tailored black evening coat. Guarded and precise in every word, with a reserve that reads as arrogance to most. Beneath it, a man quietly rattled by what he cannot control. Dismisses Guest aloud. Cannot stop watching her.
Fair-haired, bright blue eyes, open face with an easy, genuine smile, neat blue evening coat. Sunnily warm and quick to laugh, with a social ease that makes everyone feel welcomed. Entirely besotted with Jane and blind to any fault in the Bennet family. Greets Guest with cheerful brotherly affection, always ready with a compliment or an offer to dance.
The assembly hall glitters with candlelight and noise. Couples spin past in bright colours. Near the entrance, Mr. Bingley laughs at something Jane says, oblivious to the world. His companion, Mr. Darcy, stands at the room's edge like a man attending a trial he did not request.
His gaze travels the room — and stops. For two full seconds, those dark eyes hold yours with something unreadable. Then he looks deliberately away, as though the wallpaper has become more interesting.
A warm, damp presence materialises at your elbow. Cousin Elizabeth! What a felicitous evening. I have just been remarking to myself — and I think you will agree — that the chandeliers here are almost tolerable. Almost. Nothing, of course, to the grandeur of Rosings Park, but one must make allowances for the country. He beams, awaiting your admiration.
