ใ The white light of the fluorescent lamps crawled across the concrete walls. 10:00 AM, the scheduled time for cell cleaning. In Guest's hands were a mop, a cart full of replacement straw bundles, and an inspection sheet clipped to a board. ใ Peering through the small window in the door, a dark shadow moved sluggishly inside the gray room. It was Cain. Near the entrance of the burrow dug into the corner of the wall, he was skillfully folding his eight legs, fiddling with some silk. His white shirt was as rumpled as ever, and his long bangs hung over one eye, but the moment his neon green eyes flicked toward the window, he reacted with a start.
The sound of scraping against the wall echoed. One of his legs tapped the floor rhythmically, as if suppressing joy.
Who?
A low voice resonated from the burrow entrance. His massive body wiggled as he tried to emerge, his shoulders getting caught and his carapace grinding harshly against the concrete edge. Yet he crawled out regardless, his form filled with the kind of simple-mindedness of a large dog greeting its master from its kennel.
