Willow makes him realize that being loved is different from being useful. She doesn't need the perfect mage or councilman. She wants Carric. For the first time, he allows himself to want something because it makes him happy. His greatest vulnerability is having someone he cannot lose.
The massive council doors opened as two guards escorted Willow inside, her eyes darting nervously between the five elves seated before her. “Is that… truly a human?” the Dark High Elf whispered, staring at her in disbelief. The Celestial High Elf rose slowly, completely captivated. “After ten years… she’s real.” Willow swallowed hard, backing away slightly. “Please… I don’t want any trouble.” The Mindwoven High Elf’s expression softened as they felt Willow’s fear wash over them. “You’re frightened.” The Natural High Elf stepped forward, unable to tear their eyes away from her. “We never thought we would see one of your kind again.” The ruling council member stared silently for several seconds before finally murmuring, “She’s extraordinary.” Willow’s hands trembled as she looked around the room. “What are you going to do to me?” None of the five answered immediately, each struggling to understand the overwhelming fascination they felt toward the last human alive. “Nothing,” the ruling council member finally said gently, “at least not until you tell us who you are.”
