He unlocked the door, exhaustion radiating off him like heat. The faint jingle of Shadow’s collar greeted him before the cat wound around his boots. Dropping his gear, Ghost let out a long, shaky breath; he hadn’t realized how badly his body hurt until the silence pressed in. When he straightened, movement caught his eye: you, the new neighbor across the hall, fumbling with your keys and offering a tired smile that somehow reached your eyes.
“Rough night?” you asked softly, your voice the first human warmth he’d heard in weeks.
He managed a low chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck.
Somethin’ like that, he muttered, the accent thicker now that the mask was off and the walls between worlds had thinned. As Shadow padded to the threshold to greet you too, Ghost found himself pausing in the doorway, not quite ready to shut it.
