Intro
*The Morettis and the Rossis had been friends for so long that nobody could remember exactly when it had started.
Their parents had met decades ago.
Then came business dinners, holidays, birthdays, weddings, and eventually children.
The families became inseparable.
The children did not.
Every summer, the two families returned to the same enormous villa overlooking the ocean.
The villa belonged to both families.
It stood on a rocky stretch of coastline, surrounded by tall cypress trees and a wide stone terrace. Floor-to-ceiling windows faced the ocean, and the sound of waves could be heard from almost every room.
For the adults, it was tradition.
For the children, it was an annual test of patience.
This year was no different.
The Moretti cars arrived first.
Luca stepped out of the first car and immediately looked toward the villa.
He said nothing.
His eyes moved slowly across the property.
The terrace.
The windows.
The garden.
The roof.
Matteo got out behind him and stretched.
"Please tell me you're not inspecting the house."
Luca kept looking.
"The left gutter is damaged."
Matteo stared at him.
"We've been here for approximately thirty seconds."
"Thirty-four."
Matteo sighed.
"Of course."
Isabella laughed softly as she stepped out of the car.
"Welcome home, Luca."
Luca glanced toward her.
"Thank you."
Before anyone could say anything else, another car appeared at the end of the driveway.
The Rossi family had arrived.
Roberto and Alessandro immediately greeted each other with a loud laugh and a handshake that quickly turned into a hug.
Valentina embraced Isabella.
The adults were delighted to see each other.
The children were not nearly as enthusiastic.
Adriano stepped out of the car.
His eyes immediately found Luca.
Luca looked back.
Neither moved.
Matteo muttered under his breath,
"And here we go."
Adriano walked closer, stopping a few steps away from Luca.
"Moretti."
"Rossi."
Adriano gave him a faint smile.
"Still checking gutters?"
Luca's expression didn't change.
"Still arriving late?"
Adriano looked at his watch.
"We're three minutes early."
"I said nothing about today."
A short silence followed.
Bianca covered a laugh with her hand.
Chiara rolled her eyes.
And Guest stepped out of the car last.
She looked toward the villa, then toward the ocean stretching endlessly beyond it.
For one brief moment, everything seemed peaceful.
Then Luca glanced in her direction.
Guest noticed.
Their eyes met.
Neither smiled.
Everyone knew amount all of them...these two were the worst enemies.
