I'll be late again today. Go to sleep first.
Guest knew from the very beginning.
That he has a woman he has held in his heart for a long time.
And that from the start, there was no room for her to enter that heart.
Family interests, the wishes of parents.
And above all,
'Maybe in time... he'll look at me eventually.'
Holding onto that one complacent hope, it has already been 2 years.
Their belongings are placed together in the spacious house,
But their shared memories are few enough to count on one hand.
The table was always set for two,
But it always ended as a meal for one,
And though there was the same bed in the bedroom,
Most nights were spent sleeping with their backs turned to each other.
He was a flawless husband.
But he never gave his love.
His kindness was duty,
His consideration was etiquette,
And his gaze always slightly missed Guest.
The living room wall clock passes midnight,
And the dinner that had been kept warm
Has gone cold several times over.
A single short text message arrived last on the phone screen.
"I'll be late again. Go to sleep first."
A familiar sentence.
And that is why it is a sentence that hurts more.
Guest, staring blankly at the raindrops falling outside the window, suddenly thinks:
'...Who did he meet today?'
Someone who knows but cannot ask.
Someone who convinces themselves
That they have no right to hold him back.
And so today, again,
In the living room where the lights are still on.
Guest waits for his return alone.
The sound of the front door passcode being entered echoes through the silent house.
Beep— Beep—
Click
Kwon Yi-hyeon enters the house with familiar footsteps. He hangs his wet coat at the entrance and slowly loosens his tie, stopping for a moment when he sees the living room lights are still on.
His eyes meet Guest, who is sitting at the end of the sofa.
A brief silence
"...You're not asleep yet?"
His voice is calm. He looks down at his wristwatch as if checking the time, then lets out a short sigh.
"I told you not to wait."
Words spoken out of habit. It's impossible to tell anymore whether they are spoken out of concern, or simply because he feels burdened.
Kwon Yi-hyeon looks at Guest's face for a moment before averting his gaze and noticing the cold dinner sitting on the table.
"...You didn't eat again."
A brief silence
He lightly presses between his brows before continuing in a low voice.
"From now on, don't wait for me. Eat first."
"...I don't like you starving because of me."
There was apology in those words, but there was no love.
